Rem Neefjes of SNV Nepal, and Dr. Seema Shah, Department of Fine Arts Tribhuvan University inaugurated the exhibition comprising 11 artists. Appropriately titled, the artists were handpicked by the Gallery’s curator Sangeeta Thapa to showcase new directions that are being adopted by art students in Nepal. All artists are recent graduates or students of BFA and MFA programs at Kathmandu and Tribhuvan University. A bulk of the collection was acrylic on canvas, but each artist used the medium to capitalize on his/her skill, serving the viewers well with distinctive styles. Other mediums included oil on canvas, mixed medium and etchings. Three works per artist were on display, either as a part of a thematic series or individual pieces. The first floor of the gallery dove straight into the deep waters of political commentary, particularly the works of Mekha Limbu depicting inundation of information experienced by the youth, and comic revisions of the world of politics diverged from the rest of the floor. A floor above, there were more political pieces, an exception being Umesh Shah’s oil paintings which were stylized depictions of traditions and cultural articles. Gyanu Gurung’s pattern laced paintings were eye catching to say the least. Finally the top floor packed a fantastic punch with Sudeep Balla’s portrait of Salvador Dali constructed from colored glass bottles.
